The Art of Gift (Certificate) Giving

We recently celebrated my sister and brother in-laws’ birthdays.  They are about to move into a home they just built, so I knew they’d really appreciate a gift card to West Elm (one of their favorite decor stores).  They’ve already been “window shopping” and will enjoy getting to make some new purchases for their home.

Even when the gift I’m giving is a gift certificate, and really, who doesn’t appreciate one?, I still like to give the recipient a little something to “open” – a companion to the gift certificate that helps the card containing money feel more personal. And it makes presenting the gift card that much more fun.  It doesn’t have to be anything pricey, just something thoughtful.

I saw that my “sista” (as we call each other), pinned this cookie jar owl from West Elm, so I thought it would be the perfect container for the gift card!

Have you turned to Pinterest for gift ideas yet?  I think it’s awesome because, if your friends/family are pinners, you can get a sense of what they like or want via their Pinterest boards.  I have a “Yes, please” board- sort of a wish/want/desire list for fun.

  1. Loooove this idea – makes it more fun and personal. Especiallly love that the gift is from the same place as the gift card. And a wishlist pinterest board – genius!

  2. I love this idea! It really is so cute. I have a "Wishlist" board on Pinterest that my husband knows to consult before any gift-giving holiday…that way, it's something that I would like, but I'm still surprised! I love when my friends and family have similar boards, too!

  3. Megan, What a nice idea! I always just stick it in an envelope. That does make it so much more special and personal and it is an added touch that you were stalking her boards and specifically got something she likes. Great "sista" ideed!

  4. That is so thoughtful, Megan. I never even though about it that way {with pinning}. Super cute. . .and so appreciating your hombre stars!

  5. Love that little owl!! And LOVE the fabric you shot it on!!??!! You're a sweet sista…she's luck to have you 🙂

  6. I've used Pinterest to get gift ideas for birthdays and baby showers. Usually a cute packaging idea. I like your giftcard in another small token.
