A Day in My Life (Saturday)

I must have an inner-voyeur lurking inside me because I absolutely get a thrill from peeking into other people’s lives.  And I especially like seeing how their day-to-day lives operate.  I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m interested in the details, like do you drink coffee when you wake up, are you a night owl or early bird, do you typically eat in or out?  Getting these tidbits of information helps me feel like I know you more intimately.
If you’re like me, then this post is for you.  This past Saturday, I made a point to take pictures throughout the day, in an effort to chronicle a typical day in my life- a typical Saturday, that is.  Of course, no Saturday is exactly alike, sometimes there’s a birthday party to attend or something, but this gives you a general idea.

7:00 a.m. Wake up.  Drink coffee.  It’s kinda ridiculous how much I look forward to this each day.
7:15 a.m. Sit at the breakfast table and eat oatmeal while I start making our grocery list.  I like to browse through some cookbooks for inspiration for a “new” meal to prepare each week, but today I can’t seem to narrow it down.  It’s about this time that I have so much excitement for the weekend and day ahead that my mind starts racing with everything I want/have to do.  I have to remind myself to just slow down.

7:30 a.m. James wakes up.  Bedhead and all:)
8:00 a.m.  Daddy goes to workout.  (We agreed the night before that we’d take turns working out this morning so that we could both do it.  Some Saturdays, we’ll go to the park together, walking the 3-mile track while pushing James in the running stroller.)  I hang out with James in the living room while he plays.  I start flipping through a couple magazines and watch Giada.
8:30 a.m. James and I make chocolate chip pancakes.  This is his first time and he really liked them.
9:00 a.m. Start making black bean chili (it takes about 2 1/2 hours to cook).  I like to have something homemade on hand to eat throughout the weekend and had been wanting to try this recipe from Cook’s Illustrated.
9:30 a.m. Dad gets home, he plays football in the backyard with James.
9:30 a.m. I head to the park for a run.  I’m not too far into my “run” when I realize I didn’t eat enough this morning to fuel me the whole way- and I ate too long ago. I looked for a protein bar to eat on the way, but we didn’t have any.  I end up briskly walking 2 of the 3 miles.  I pretty much think about what I’m going to eat when I’m done the whole time.
10:30 a.m.  I’m so hungry after my walk, that I’m almost not hungry.  I planned to take some pictures of my bedroom for my blog this afternoon while the light is good, and I need flowers, so I stop at a flower shop on the way home and pick up peonies.
10:45 a.m. I’ve never had peonies in my own home and am completely smitten with how pretty they are.  I feel like I’ve really indulged and want to share, so I take a quick picture and upload it to my blog for y’all to see, hoping it brightens your day too.
11:00 a.m.  I eat tuna for lunch and an apple with peanut butter.  I head upstairs to take pictures of my bedroom and sitting room for the blog.  First, I have to tidy up both spaces, then I spend over an hour taking about 60 photos, 90% of which will never make it to the blog.
11:30 a.m.  Chili is ready!

12:30 p.m. Put James down for a nap.  I finally take a shower.   Feels so good to get clean!
1:00 p.m.  I download my photos onto my computer and clean the kitchen.  (I left it a mess when I went to the park).
2:00 p.m.  James wakes up, but he actually never slept that well.  We’re all kinda tired but have errands to run, so we head to Starbucks, then Target.
3:30 p.m.  James is too tired and fussy to continue the errands, so I take him home while my husband does the grocery shopping.  I get to rock my baby in my arms for about 30 minutes while he sleeps hard.  I soak up the sound of his breath and his sweet smell.  I’m wishing someone was here to photograph this precious moment.
5:00 – 6:00 p.m.  We put away the groceries, make dinner for James, and I lay down on the couch for a catnap.  It’s not long before James climbs aboard to get “cozy” with me:) We relax in the living room, not doing much of anything.  I need to do laundry, but figure it can wait till tomorrow.

6:30 p.m.  Get freshened up for dinner, putting on some makeup and a new sundress.

7:00 p.m.  We drop off James with my sis-n-law and go out to dinner.  This is a very rare occasion- we almost never do dates.
7:30 p.m.  We go to a neighborhood restaurant, Shade, and have a nice dinner, starting with a  glass of wine and a cheese plate.

10:00 p.m.  Go to bed after picking up James.  Sweet dreams!
So tell me, does my Saturday resemble yours?

  1. "Wake up. Drink coffee. It's kinda ridiculous how much I look forward to this each day." This pretty much sums up how I feel as I go to bed at night. Already looking forward to that morning cup of coffee. 🙂

I'm impressed that you dive into the cookbook to try something new regularly!

  2. Wow…your Saturday sounds so lovely…Ours is a mainly rush through the day, breakfast, rush to the shops, rush home, clean, do the laundry/iron, rush to make lunch/dinner and sleep. Sundays are spent with family or catching up and making meals for the week lunches (stews, etc.) I think we need to slow down…

  3. Love the peek into your Saturday! I would have traded with you this past weekend in a heartbeat. We spent it out back redoing our arbor over our hot tub, lugging 100 or so brick/concrete landscape things up the hill to be picked up since we no longer need them, trimming bushes, digging up the garden (it's getting moved, AGAIN due to landscape changes). Sod is being put in today and I cannot wait for it to all be finished!! Oh, and coffee…a MUST!

  4. Love shade too! Can I ask where your flower shop is? We've lived here a year and haven't found one yet, and I love flowers.

  5. Long time reader (since the first closet post!) and first time commenter…go figure the reason is your Lulu shorts! I love Lulu…I am so addicted lol

  6. Love this! I love your blog! It was one of the first ones I ever started following and I enjoy every post. It's kind of crazy how much I look forward to my coffee too 🙂 Mommyhood survival = CAFFEINE!

  7. I really love this post – please do more "day in the life" posts more often! I also really love the sneak peek into others lives – fun to compare and makes me feel more normal, haha!

  8. With three kids under 7, no…my Saturday is not nearly as lovely as this! You are lucky! My Saturday usually involves getting a lot done in the limited hours I have my spouse home. I sometimes will make some time to have some peace by myself on Saturday or Sunday, but this requires leaving 3 monkeys with my husband and I'm not gone for long! Your Saturday sounds very nice! I can relate to the starting to work out and realizing I didn't eat enough part. 🙂

  9. It is similiar accept that I do my grocery shopping on Fridays after work since I like to wake up on Saturdays not having to worry about going to the store. Date nights are great …. we get to have one about once a month thanks to my mom! 🙂 It's nice to get out and have a nice leisurely dinner without the kids. 🙂

  10. I've been reading your blog for quite awhile now but this is the first time I have commented. This was a great idea, Megan. I'm really nosey about what people do too. I love watching, What's in your purse videos on Youtube, see nosey, nosey!;) Oh, morning coffee is one of my favourite things in life.

  11. Loved this post! I always love getting a sneak peek in people's lives. and yes my Saturdays are pretty similar except for my hubs usually works half the day. Your chili sounds great and I love peonies too. You have inspired me to do a post like this! And yes I start my day with coffee and end with wine too:)

  12. As I am a Brit its tea and lots of it in the morning!! My SAturdays used to be similar to yours, but then I had another child, and then they grew up, so now my Saturdays are taking children to horseriding lessons, soccer matches and doing school homework. My life is a whirlwind and in all honesty I would not change it a little bit (although it is nice when I do not have to watch footie in the rain and we can stay in PJ's until 11am!)

  13. LOVE this post! Yes, I'm completely nosy about people's lives, too! Your nails look great, btw. 😉 And I can't believe you get up so early on Saturdays!!??!! But maybe if I went to bed before 12:30 I could too! :/

  14. So fun! I am really envious that James sleeps so long. Ours are up before us! Love the napping part and the photo shoot. Isn't it amazing how many photos we end up snapping. Fun to see this, Megan!

  15. I love this post! I like knowing what other people are doing. I'm interested in seeing if people live like me or not. Your day sounds a lot like mine except I don't have any kids & I usually take an earlier nap! HAHA! Have a great day!

  16. I wished my Saturday was like yours! Looks like you have a nice balance of work and play going on. Good for you. I am a night owl by nature so getting up early not something that happens often or willingly with me. I do love my coffee though! Its what I do every morning. Brew the coffee and sit down for nice little read in blog world. From there things tend to get crazy. I dash to do errands, clean house, visit inlaws oh and go to work. I work most weekends. I like that you try at least one new recipe a week. I would like to do that too.

  19. Loved reading along! Sounds like the perfect day…and you got a lot accomplished!!

  20. I loved reading about your Saturday. I also love those type of posts and I love the "what's in your purse" posts also ~ yeah I'm a goofball. I spent most of my Saturday getting items ready for our big subdivision yard sale this weekend except I was interrupted a million times by my 4 year old…….I love this site for good healthy whole food recipes ~ http://www.skinnytaste.com

  21. Love reading your blog and love posts like this! I just recently started a blog and did a post similar to this over the course of a week! Not as in depth but still a snap shot of the week! Love it! Thanks for blogging! 🙂

  22. Hey Meg, love J4's bed head.
Sat, woke up about 8 let beau out to pee and got back in bed to sleep til 930ish, got out of bed about 10am, got dressed to workout at the gym with Chaz, first we had to go to 2 different banks and then finally made it to the gym about 11:45am, I dislike like going that late on saturday but Chaz likes it so that is my compromise to get him to go. We go home about 1pm take showers and I do a few things online, while chaz rests, he cracks me up. I think I woke him for lunch at 2:30, so late and again not what I wanted but at least it was saturday. We go to one of our favorite burger places, when we are done we need to run a few errands to get stuff for an oil change in the tahoe and I want to go to the outlet mall so he joins me, but we split off so he can look at manly stores. We finish up about 2 hrs later and decide to go to academy for more shopping. I think about 730-8ish we call a friend while we are out and pick him up to have dinner with us quickly. We had italian at Russo's and it was delish. After we finish dinner we all go to a good friends house to party and play games/watch lakers. We have such a good time until about 3-4am, after I think I went to bed about 430am. The saturday life of a married couple with out kiddos. Sunday was super busy with chores, and we had people for dinner too. Hope to see you guys soon 🙂 Love ya

  23. Yup! Sure does 🙂 BTW, any advice for a Seattle family getting ready to move to Plano TX? Scared out of my mind! Love your blog too 😉

  24. love getting a glimpse into your day! sounds a lot like ours. we hardly ever do dates either, but we don't have sitters and family is in another state, it's a constant struggle to have "dates."

  25. Ha, no. My kids are up at the crack of dawn on the weekends. It's unbelievable! This Saturday I had a nice break to get my hair done before eleventymillion birthday parties.

  26. Loved having a peek at your day 🙂 And also, I get extremely excited for my morning coffee too. I look forward to it every.day.

  27. Wow, it sounds very relaxing. Loved the pic of James with his bedhead. LOL on taking all those pics-I used to do the same thing when I blogged more. Sounds like a lovely date night.

I don't get hardly any time to myself since my son requires 24/7 care with meds every 6 hours so there isn't much room for error. I am up every 1.5-3 hours to turn him over, change diapers or something. I cook daily so that takes up a lot of time making everything from scratch plus it seems like I clean a lot, lol. Just last month, I made a commitment to take time for pampering on a regular basis-I budgeted in regular pedicures and this month, I'll have my first massage in umpteen years. My goal for 2012 is to remember the person I used to be and to take time for myself.

  28. On the weekends when we are just hanging around town this is very similar- although I'm also impressed that you two split up for workouts (and decided on it the night before!). Maybe that lack of planning and follow through is why I still have some post-baby work to do :-/ I get excited about coffee too! Today at Target I bought a few new K-Cup boxes, one for iced coffee YUMMY! Overall, sounds like a very intentional weekend…I think I'll do a similar post too! We should do a link round-up of posts for all of us curious readers 🙂

  29. I love this post! I'm tempted to do one. I too look forward to drinking that coffee. I also do a similar routine with perusing cookbooks and grocery shopping. Fun!

  30. Your saturday sounds nice!! I feel like I never have time to work out but really need to start making time like you do!!

Our date nights (especially on weekends) feel rare lately, def looking forward to our next one!! 🙂

  31. Love your blog and have been a follower for a while now 🙂 I live in Houston (Heights). Love me some Shade! Any plans to organize another Houston blogger meet up? Just curious. Was sad to miss the one last spring. – Kristy
