DIY (Scrabble Word Art)

I think a lot about my home.  As in, “Where can I find the perfectly sized bench to go at the end of our bed?  One that is upholstered in the right colored fabric and has legs, so that it’s not too bulky, but isn’t as expensive as the Crate & Barrel Colette Bench I’ve been coveting?  One that isn’t too short and fits the size of the bed nicely.”  I can get so wrapped up in searching for the perfect item for our home that I have to slow down and remind myself that the main point is,  “How do I want this house to feel?”
It really doesn’t matter how my home looks if it isn’t comfortable or doesn’t emanate warmth and love.   I want James to recall the home of his youth as a safe, fun place where love was bountiful.  This is also the reason I’ve been making such an effort to cook more, because cooking and preparing meals to serve to others is a way of showing love.  And I thoroughly enjoy how the house smells when something yummy is brewing.  Those are the smells I want my son to recall.  And hopefully, when he’s older, he’ll have no memory of a time when mama didn’t cook.  He’ll just know that mama makes the best _____.  We’re still working on that part:)  Even if he only wants to eat rice and beans, night after night, for dinner now.
I love it when friends drop by for a quick visit and end up lounging around, forgetting about what time it is and sitting and relaxing for a leisurely while.
I love to watch kids playing and hear them giggling with delight.

I made a simple welcome sign out of Scrabble letters and placed it near our home’s entryway, as a message to everyone who enters our home.  I hope you feel welcome and comfortable here. And visit often.
I used red nail polish to paint the heart.

  1. I can really relate to this post. When I moved into my place this summer, I rushed into buying things. I've ended up selling many of the items on craigslist and looking for unique and cozy items that make my place look like a home and not a store. It's hard to not want to finish everything at once, but slowing down has made me realize its my home. The scrabble art is adorable 🙂

  2. You are so sweet…you are always so easy to be with and people feel comfortable around you…I know that feeling carries through your home, too!

  3. your scrabble art is just..amazing! 🙂 I love it! I'm sure james will not only remember your cooking someday…he'll remember how you made your home one hell of a work of art! 🙂

  4. The Scrabble art is really cute. I love what you said about cooking and wanting James to remember those good foods. And you are right, cooking good food is a way of showing love.

When my son was young, he loved my cooking. I didn't cook everything from scratch like I do now, but he loved my cooking so much, he refused to eat anything that they offered went they went on field trips. My son is severely disabled but it was so cute. Everyone knew the rules….he only ate his mother's cooking, lol. He'd turn down ice cream, snacks or anything they do on the field trips. Fast forward to 2006 when he was very sick and they told me he could no longer eat any real foods and everything had to be through a feeding tube. I was so depressed for a very long time. No one to cook for and none of the foods I made were for him. The good news is around Christmas time, I found a way to make real foods for him and process them with a high powered blender it's a lot tougher than it sounds…not quite like making a smoothie for us). Everything must go through a tube the size of a pinhole but he gets real, healthy meals, made from nutritious foods. I did it to build his immune system and he's flourishing. We both love it and it's wonderful to cook again. Food is definitely love.
