Chevron Rug DIY

Little by little, I’ve been trying to add some life to our upstairs hallway.  A zebra print, large mirror and some framed photos have been hung, but the area still needed a runner.  After searching for what felt like ages, I recently thought I found the perfect one!  Tray- living room 014 Tray- living room 004 A navy blue, 2.5 x 9 foot zig zag rug by Calypso Home!  This rug was pretty pricey, but since I hadn’t found anything else I loved as much, I made the splurge. image Last week, I got an email from UPS informing me that my rug had been delivered to my home address.  Except the rug hadn’t actually arrived and the address they had for me wasn’t me, but a local Home Depot!  After getting nowhere with UPS, I ended up loading up the baby in the car and heading to Home Depot to track down my rug.  The manager there was really nice and was able to retrieve my rug for me.  I was so excited to get it home and unwrapped.  But unfortunately, I don’t care for how it looks in the hallway.  First, it’s way more blue than the dark navy I pictured and I didn’t realize it was such a thin flat weave.   Also, I’m thinking now maybe I need two runners instead of just one for this long hallway??  And perhaps a different pattern with more colors?? image image Needless to say, I returned my rug.  But, a few days later, I found this awesome hand painted chevron rug by Carissa at The Fabulous Design File. image image She used a flat weave sisal-type rug (8 x 10) and two coats of Benjamin Moore latex floor paint in black after measuring and taping off the peaks.  I think the result is amazing!  Look at how crisp she got those lines.  Go here to see how she did it. image Stunning, don’t you think? Still not sure what I’m going to do in the hallway, but I love Carissa’s rug! And I must be on a Chevron kick these days because I also ordered these black and gold “zig zag” plates and mugs from Mikasa.  They have other darling patterns and colors too.  An early Christmas gift from the hubby (after a little hint, hint)!  I think they will be so pretty on our Christmas table- and every other day of the year! image image  Can’t wait for them to arrive- I hope they don’t end up at Home Depot!  ********* The Trendy Peas Giveaway ends on Thursday December 9, 2010 at midnight central time.  Winner will be announced on Friday December 10, 2010.

  1. I think this will make a great DIY project for you while baby James naps…

The artist in me wonders if mixing that floor paint with a fabric medium would make it more durable in the long run?

    IDK, just something to consider…

  2. LOVE that runner…looks outstanding! I’m hosting a Christmas Open House on the 9th…would love to have you come by and join in on the fun!

    Blessings,
    Linda

  3. So funny…I just put a chevron rug in my design plan for the family room of the "clients" we had to re-do a house for in my drafting class. I've always loved the pattern! I think you're right though, it's a tad bit blue for the hallway. I'm excited to see what you end up with. And man, Carissa's rug is fabulous!

  4. How strange that it'd end up at the local Home Depot. I definitely think you could manage that hand-made chevron rug. The lines are so perfectly crisp!

  5. Bummer about all the hassle you went through and then it didn't look good. I agree with you on the size and color, just wasn't the jewelry you needed. I say do a chevron hanging print on the wall, and go with something different on the floor that won't compete with the zebra print on the wall. I see a lush thick rug for there…

  6. Well look at you go! Super bummer about the rug you orginally purchased but at least you gave it a try right? Perhaps something textured and thicker on the floor? That zebra print is so pretty as is the railing! xo Good luck!!

  7. Oh, I so want those plates. I really do!! I think you are right . . rug is not the right color. I had seen that DIY rug post and I am just not brave enough to tackle all of the taping. I think my two year old would untape as I taped. Can't wait to see what you choose. I love your dark floors. Gorgeous.

  8. That stinks that the rug didn't work out (especially after the hassle). I agree — you need something a little more substantial and it looks more a little more blue/purple than navy. But I LOVE the idea of a chevron rug. I think the pattern is perfect for that hallway. I have actually been wanting to make one myself.

  9. Honey..I completely agree with you…its doesnt work in that space…what a disappointing run you have had with this rug from the beginning..poor thing.
I absolutley love the DIY job by Carissa..I am almost tempted to try this myself..what an amazing result. You are so creative and clever with your DIY jobs..I have no doubt you would ace it if you gave it a go : ) x

  10. I too love chevron but of course in the wearable kind on kids. I did a post. But I love love the chevron rug! thecoolkidsblog.com

  11. I think it should be illegal for rugs to be so expensive! I mean we all need them (okay, want them)! I was recently looking for a bold pattern for my office and wondered if I could just make my own. Good to know you can! I think you should definitely give it a shot… for the price you paid and how small that runner is? Robbery Megan! I wish the Dwell Studio for Target line had a bigger selection!

  12. I agree the runner was definately too short for your hallway. I think you need two and more color is not a bad idea. I do love the Chevron stripe though. I love those plates you ordered!! I might have to order some of those;)

  13. I love chevron stripes, they are just a bit too much pattern for our house I think. But I also agree that runner was too short and did not create the look I think you are going for.

  14. I love those plates and mugs! I painted some chevron pattern curtains for our bedroom and it was pretty easy once the math was figured out and the first drape was a success.

  15. Wow – that rug came out so well! Definitely a perfectionist at work. Just the thought of me, paint and a rug makes me shudder 🙂 The crispness of the lines are totally what makes it work.

  16. I agree that rug is WAY more blue than navy! I say go for the DIY rug, the pattern will look great in there and you might have better luck finding one that is longer.

  17. Nothing is every easy is it! How annoying that you had to pack up the babe and make your way to HD…at least they had your rug!!

Can't wait to see what you end up doing with that fabulous hallway!! Love the dark floors!

Can't believe that other rug you found was painted, that's crazy creative!!!!!!!!!

  18. That's too bad about the rug that you ordered…but you have to try that DIY one! When I first saw Carissa's rug, I could not believe she painted it! You have to show us how it turns out!

  19. I can see how the big orange Home Depot was mistaken for your house.

You could totally make your own rug…Ikea has nice flat runners. I'm actually hoping to create a chevron out of my large jute rug…someday.

  20. That chevron rug is absolutely AMAZING! She must be one patient girl b/c those lines are perfect. So….when are you going to tackle this? And more importantly…what would you charge to make one? 🙂

    Cheers my dear~

  21. I've had that runner from Calypso Home in my home files for a while now! Good to know it's more blue then navy…

    Love the DIY option too!

  22. Your right, the blue in the runner doesn't even match the blue in the photo taken from the website. Two totally different blues!

On another note, that DIY chevron rug is Amazing!

  23. i absolutely LOVE the painted rug… it looks awesome on your dark floors. The chevron print is just fabulous!

  24. You should definitely do the painted rug! It wasn't that hard, but the taping did require some patience! I LOVE those plates and cups. I need them! Thanks again for featuring my diy!

  25. That painted rug is amazing and beautiful! I'd say go for it, Megan! You're very talented! I love love love those dishes! I also adore your zebra painting. I like big and bold like that.

  26. Beautiful rug & definitely worth the trouble!
So glad I just came across your blog – love it & am following you now!
