Christmas Staircase

I’m excited this year to start some of our own family traditions- one of which, of course, being putting up the Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving!  I’m also planning to add the Christmas decor to our staircase and have been scanning magazines and blogs for ideas.  I want to do some sort of garland, and recently measured our stairway railing at 50 feet, so I’m gonna need a LOT of garland.  Luckily, Hobby Lobby has it 50%, so I’m sure they’ll be getting a visit from me soon!  And the tree will go on the first floor, in the center of the curve of the staircase.
Update:  See our Christmas tree & staircase decor

I’ve had these images, from Centsational Girl, saved since last year.  I love how she swagged her garland (not too low) and infused it with red using ribbon, ornaments and berries.  Of course, her stairs don’t look like that now that she’s replaced the carpet with hardwoods and revamped the walls.

The green and lime garland in this stairway is nice.  You don’t normally see lime green in a traditional stairway garland.

I like this garland too, minus the pineapple.  Maybe if I were in Hawaii!

Now this is cool.  Instead of wrapping the stairs with garland, they used smaller bunches of garland, branches, berries and ornaments to adorn the individual posts.

I like how natural this one looks.

This one is quite festive, and the ice skates are a cute touch.  I’ve seen similar glittered stars at Target and Wal-Mart for $2.00.

How cute are these red wreaths?  So vibrant!

This silver and pinky/peach color combination and glittered garland is pretty swanky.
The natural leaf garland on this stairway is gorgeous.  The candles are pretty too, although pretty impractical here.

And talk about a pop of color!  How fun, but I’m not sure how many people have stark white stairs and walls in their home.

I know a lot of people have carpeted stairs like these.  The pillow decor is very easy and festive.

If you have stairs, how do you adorn them for Christmas?

  1. Christmas is my favorite holiday…Can't wait to see what you do with that gorgeous staircase!!! I love the garland with the lime green…I'm finally changing my colors out this year & lime/apple green is one of the colors..I love it!

  2. I love the look of fresh cut greens draped down the staircase, so I tried it one year, and realized why it is better to have faux- it dries out in about 2 days unless you spray it with water. But if you have a wooden banister (like most people) that's not practical either!!
I use greens with pinecones already wired in, some red and white checkered ribbon bows, and some glittery silver beads draped throughout. 🙂 Can't wait to see that Christmas tree of yours nestled into the stairwell!

  3. I love the natural with the off white incorporated ( from better homes and garden I think). We do not have stairs now but growing up we did garland and ribbon.

  4. Absolutely!! That is my most favorite thing to do!! I already want to do it! I love the better homes and garden one the best! And the colorful is very fun! I may have to tie in some fun pops of color this year because I am doing a Candy Land theme this year 😉 for the kids!

  5. I like the lime green b/c it is a mix of traditional and fun. I like the ornaments hanging from ribbon as well! It will be fun for you to figure out your Christmas decorations this year!

  6. Apparently, I am super indecisive when sick because for each picture I was like, "Oh that one," "oh, no, that one!" Great inspiration. Your tree will look beautiful in that circular part. ooooh, you will have so much fun getting your Christmas on this year.

  7. PS. I am so glad you saw the post about your nursery — please feel free to add me to your impressive featured list!!

  8. We have always adorned our front staircase (we have a back one too) with lighted garland. The garland itself is nice and full with white lights and pinecones already wired in. We have four sections, each gets swagged in the middle and adorned with a large bow and ornaments of some sort. The colors have changed over the years. Last year it was chocolate and blue to match a lot of our decor. However, we are going for a more natural look this year…so burlap ribbon and grapevine are in order this year. While I love the look of the real greens, they aren't practical for us as they dry out way to fast and if we incorporate too many our allergies go nuts! So, we usually save them for our mantle and smaller arrangements.

  9. I wish we had a staircase after seeing all of these gorgoeus photos! One of the traditions I started a few years ago was the big Christmas in our living room and then a mini one in each of the other rooms, including the bathrooms. It's kind of fun and makes it very festive! I can't wait to see how you decorate your staircase! Lots of great ideas!

  10. Oh how I wish I had stairs!!! I love this! I have to tell you — the Dollar Tree has those star ornaments if that is something you are looking into. I was just there and they had them in white, silver, and gold — heads up. I got mine at tarjey forever ago, but these are a deal.

Can not wait to see your finished stairs — no doubt they will be beautiful.

    Cheers~

  11. I seriously love your staircase. Heck your WHOLE house. Very beautiful.

Because your staircase is so gorgeous your possibilities for Christmas decor are endless!

Love all of the inspiration pics. I picked up some of those Christmas glittered stars at Target last year. I believe they came in bunches of 4 or 5. I know the dollar store also had some very very similar 🙂

  12. I do have a great staircase to decorate for the holidays's , last year I used simple light blue pompom garland and ribbon , this year I am deciding between that and a silver ball garland I recently picked up , I better decide soon I have 700-900 people coming for a holiday house tour in 18 days , oh my I better get back to the renos I am doing bye , oh love your closet

  13. I have many of those same inspiration pics! We have a new home with 30' of bannister to decorate. I can't wait to get started on it 🙂

  14. Now I really wish I had a staircase these are absolutely gorgeous inspirations. I just found your blog and am loving it. You have a new follower!

  15. Love that you posted this. I haven't done ours since we moved in 3 years ago and would love to do it this year. It's long so I know it will be alot of garland. These are such pretty pics – can't wait to see what you have done.

  16. Love that you posted this. I haven't done ours since we moved in 3 years ago and would love to do it this year. It's long so I know it will be alot of garland. These are such pretty pics – can't wait to see what you have done.

  17. Ooh so many pretty choices. I can't wait to see what you come up with! I do love those red wreaths… those are going in my inspiration file 🙂

  18. Great inspiration photos! I like the first BH&G photo. The one with the pineapple is interesting, but I'm not a huge fan of pineapples with decorating. They are, however, a big deal in Williamsburg and used a lot with Colonial/traditional decor, esp. around here in VA.

  19. I can't wait for the day when we are homeowners. The house must have a staircase just for the reason to decorate it for Christmas! I can't wait to see what you do with yours. 🙂

  20. Those are all gorgeous. Staircases decorated for Christmas add so much festiveness, I am sure that yours will look beautiful.

  21. I love the red wreaths! Something to think about when deciding if you want to purchase 50' of garland….do you have a place to store it, remember how dusty it will get, having to 'fluff' it when pulling it out of the box every year.

Okay, now I sound like Debbie Downer! But storage is an issue for me…but I'm sure since you were smart enough to design your closet, you probably included ample storage in your blueprints!

Whatever you do will be stunning. And you are so lucky to have an 'obvious' spot for your Christmas tree!!!

  22. We don't have stairs, and this is the only time of year that I wish we did. The lime green garland is my FAV!!!

  23. We just built a new house and we decided we wanted a one story. Which is all great, until Christmas rolls around. Where the heck am I supposed to put my garland?

  24. Your tree & staircase is going to look FABULOUS!!! I wish I had a 2 story house for this very reason!! Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

  25. What a fun post! Can wait to see what you come up with. I'm kind of liking the silver with the peach/pink color. Different, but so classy and chic!

  26. I decorate other people's homes for Christmas, their trees, stairways and make arrangements. I can tell you that the least expensive way to do a stairway is to measure (like you did) and then keep the garland right along the handrailing and not swagged, tiying it on with plastic ties that you can get at Home Depot. If you are going to swag, then take a piece of rope, or string and put it on the staircase in just the way you will want it then measure that before you buy your garland. Hopefully these hints will help you. I know your home will look GORGEOUS for the holidays and I can't wait to see it!!!!! XO, Pinky

  27. Beautiful! I'm sure your staircase will look lovely! It's gorgeous on its own. Oh, and the pineapple is actually a southern symbol meaning "welcome" 🙂 That's probably where they were going with it…leave it to a South Carolinian to know that! But I wouldn't put it up either if I had to tell every single person that came in the door that so they wouldn't think I was insane! haha

  28. Great inspiration photos! We moved into our house right before Christmas and before most of the boxes were unpacked, I had the tree up and decorated! And one of my favorite things is putting garland on our staircase!

  29. Megan, I came across your blog from the "Serenity Now" site. And this particular post caught my eye. I love the Christmas staircase – beautiful! I'd also love to have a house with a Christmas tree on the second floor that's visible from the street.

  30. Thanks for the inspiration photos. I set up the tree today and realized how few decorations we own. Stairway garland will be the perfect next addition. Top photos are my fave, then the garland with lime green.

  31. great inspiration, I love the individually tied arrangements, I don't normally decorate my stair case, I just might have to this year…:)

  32. Our stairs at home is spiral, so we can't put some stuff on the steps. I don't think it's a good idea anyway 'cause I'm clumsy. That's why the railing is the only "place" where I can put some decor. But that's good 'cause I get to concentrate on it. I love the silver and peach theme! It gave me some ideas for this year.
