Our Breakfast Room

When designing our home, I dreamed of a little breakfast room with a window where we could enjoy our weekend mornings, lingering over the table with a cup of coffee and the paper or a magazine.  The room would also double as a place for casual dinners and easy get-togethers with friends.  The logical location for our breakfast room was just off the kitchen, adjacent to the living room.  We ended up with two windows, plus the glass door, so lots of natural light.   image  After moving in, the breakfast room sat empty while I struggled to find the perfect table for the space.  Because our kitchen counters are marble and we have to be careful with them, and our formal dining room table, is, well more formal, I wanted a kitchen table that was a little rustic and did not feel precious.  With a baby, and lots of family and friends hanging out (especially now with football season) I didn’t want to have to worry about the table getting damaged or have our guests feeling like they had to be uptight about setting a drink down. Initially, I thought a round table would work best in this small, rectangular space and considered these options: image Pottery Barn- Montego Pedestal Dining Table.  Image via Pottery Barn. image Restoration Hardware- Camden Round Extension Table.  Image via Restoration Hardware. image Crate & Barrel- Orion Table.  Image via Crate & Barrel The Pottery Barn table, while pretty, was dismissed as too formal; the Restoration Hardware is the same as what we have in the formal dining room (but rectangular); and my husband thought the Crate & Barrel was too modern.  We ultimately decided on the Benchwright table and benches from Pottery Barn.  image Benches and distressed wood conveyed the casual feeling I was going for and I love the look of the metal support brackets and oversized bolts.     Dining table, sitting room 009 image The rectangular table actually ended up fitting the room perfectly.  I added the same rug (Crate & Barrel- Island Honey Chevron) that we have in the living room in an effort to unify the spaces. image So far, we’re loving this little area and table.  I agonize forever before buying furniture and am so happy when I’m ultimately pleased with the purchase!

  1. I love it, and totally understand. We had a small rectangular farmhouse table for years in our kitchen and it never felt right. A little over a year ago, we found the Harvest Pedestal table at PB and fell in love. We choose round this time and it is perfect. That small change along with changing our french doors to outswing made a huge impact on the look and function of the room. The table has held up very well.

  2. The brackets and and rustic elements….MAKE this table. Don't worry about agonizing over furniture…I do it to. I think t is part of the process and wanting to get it right..especially when $$ and time is at stake. You have a great eye…it looks fabulous.

    Cheers~

Your space turned out great though. That table works out perfectly!

  4. I wouldn't mind having a Sunday morning breakfast of pancakes in this room, sitting on one of the benches 🙂 Great choice for the look you were going for!

  5. GREAT choice! You'll love the benches too when James gets older and his friends come over for dinner…you can cram a bunch of them on one!

  6. Hi Megan! That is such a great choice. The oversized bolts add so much rustic charm. Ready to toss down my appetizer and watch some football! Well done {once again}.

  10. Hi Megan, I'm not sure if you'll catch this as it is a very late comment but I am looking at purchasing this table and benches. Do you find that you (or kids) are close enough to the table while sitting on this bench as it can not be scooted under the table?

    1. Hi Rhonda, we have never had a problem with kids not being close enough to the table while sitting on the bench. I get I do get tired of the bench sometimes and substitute in our dining chairs which have backs. But the benches are great for kids!

  11. Love your choice 🙂

Just a quick question. Are those RH harmon pendant lights over the kitchen island?
Can I know the dimensions of the island and pendants you chose?

My husband and I were interested in Harmon pendants and we have a 6 ft 3" by 4 ft 3" kitchen island. And we are confused whether to go with 11" diameter or 15".

  12. Hi! Your house is beautiful. We are looking at purchasing this table/ bench combo from PB and are wondering how it has held up with the kids. Also, how do you clean it nightly? Thanks!
